The split up of the band
I still can't believe the reasons for the split to
this day, but here it is!
The record company wanted us to
sign to a manager because they didn't want to have to speak to 5
separate people (the band) everytime they wanted us to do a gig or go in
the studio etc. They suggested we signed to Selu who had supported us
through thick and thin, paid for stage gear, food, transport etc etc. He
was a succesful business man but had never managed a band before. None
of that really mattered as he understood business, was our friend, and
was into the band.
However, Neil wouldn't sign! He
said we could do better? The end came when we gave him an ultimatum,
"sign with Selu or we would replace him!" He refused, so we sacked him.
The problem was this, Neil wrote
most of the songs. The record company asked if he would write the songs
and we would perform them, again he refused. Our songs were good, but
Neil's creative input was what the company wanted. Neil and his
families reluctance to sign with Selu had split the band!
Would we make the
same decision again? Yes we would!
We tried to move forward without
him but it wasn't to be. Joe and Ian went to the states, Geoff and I met
in various bands over the coming years and Neil became a history
Since Stormchild I have done
session work, played in numerous great semi pro bands, but always had a
well paid job which always stopped me from chasing a career in music.
Do I have any regrets? Not really,
as I still play, but I often wonder what would have happened if we had
stayed together because the record company had major plans for us and we
were a bloody good band!
I do plan to re record all the
tracks we did in the 80's with myself playing all the instruments and
singing. The songs are too good to forget about. I have signed a deal
with High Roller Records to release our original material.
Thanks for visiting the site, I
hope you enjoyed it as much as I did in putting it together. Please
leave a message, it would be great to hear from you!
Keep the faith,
